Orleans Historical Society Events Celebrated at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa

May 24th

The Orleans Historical Society will have their Antiques and Flea Market Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Professional Appraisers will be on sight for $5.00 an appraisal, so it will be just like the Antiques Road Show -- right here near the Whalewalk Inn & Spa. The hours are from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. So book for Memorial Day weekend, bring your treasures (maybe you will find some at the historical society) -- and, of course, on Sunday we will have our "smokin' barbecue". Make your reservations, as rooms are starting to fill up.

June 14th

Try our Granola Pizza topped with fresh fruit, especially strawberries, as we help celebrate Orleans Strawberry Festival. If you didn't have enough at breakfast, enjoy the harvest of the first fresh fruit of the season at the Orleans Historical Society's annual Strawberry Festival. Munch on homemade strawberry shortcake and quench your thirst with fresh lemonade, while listening to live music and shopping at the extraordinary plant sale and festival boutique. Call 508-240-1329 for details and reservations.

Lighthouse Tours and Open Houses on Cape Cod

Cape Cod Maritime Days -- May 2008

For more than 250 years after the first lighthouse was built on Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha‘s Vineyard, no book had ever been written specifically about the beacons along this shoreline. During that period, more than 40 lighthouse guided mariners through these treacherous waters, and they comprised a concentration of beacons greater than any other in the entire world. These particular lights became not only a symbol for this region, but also a display of our nation’s progress. Study about this important part of your history by reading America's Landfall: The Historic Lighthouses of Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard by Donald W. Davidson.

After reading this informative lighthouse book, you can experience some of our famous ones and visit the open houses that will hosted during Cape Cod Maritime Days throughout May.

At the National Seashore tour Highland Lighthouse, which opens for the season on May 17th. Admission is charged. You can even climb to the top of the light! View a video depicting the history, moving, and relighting of the lighthouse. Directions: Take Route 6 to the Highland Road Exit in Truro. Follow the sings for Cape Cod (Highland) Light.

Tour Nauset Light on Sundays, May 11th and 18th, 1 to 4 PM. This tour is free. Climb to the top of the light and learn about its history and importance. It is located at Nauset Light Beach, Eastham.

Vist the open house at Three Sister Lighthouses, Sundays, May 11th and 18th, 1 to 3:30 PM. This open house is free. View these lights that once served as beacons for sailors off the shores of Nauset Light Beach. Park at Nauset Light Beach in Eastham, and follow the signs, along the paved path to the lights.

So all you lighthouse buffs, book your reservations at the Inn and take advantage of these special tours and become a part of the history of Cape Cod.
