We keep hearing advertisements for "Staycations," What is up with that! One works hard all year just to gear up for VACATION. The idea of time off is to take advantage of the 4 "Rs" -- to rest, rejuvenate, relax and re-acquaint ourselves with those in our lives. How can one possibly do that, if they are staying in their own back yards. There is still cooking to do, so no great out-to-dinner meals. Beds still need to be made, rooms need to be picked up, and all those beach towels need to be washed. Staring at the lawn, you realize that needs to be mowed. You can't relax because someone always needs something from you. Our solution -- Come to our back yard and start your vacation at the Whalewalk Inn & Spa. No need to cook as you will have a gourmet breakfast upon awakening. Lunch is always great at a clam shack. Before dinner enjoy a light hors d'oeuvre on the back patio. And, of course, dinner can be either fine dining or relaxed. There is something for all palates. When you arrive back from dinner, search the video library, have a brandy or port, and a cookie, to appease the sweet tooth--Chocolate Sparrow has great deserts and candy, too. All that you didn't have to wash one pot, dish or pan. As to your accommodations -- kick back and relax. Your room is freshened daily. Your bed is made before you finish breakfast. All you have to do is sit on your porch, balcony, deck or the gazebo, kick up your feet and read that book that is on your "bucket list." If you have dishes to wash, those will be taken care of also. No muss no fuss. Stress Relief -- Bring those stress points to the Spa and have them worked on and out. A combination massage to alleviate those aches and pains, and soothe the senses is just what the VACATION ordered. Take advantage of all that the Cape has to offer. The whales have been extremely wonderful this year, sometimes spotting up to 50 at a time. See the water ecology of the Cape, while taking a Kayak trip with the guides at Goose Hummock. Hiking, biking and birding are great sport found at the Cape Cod National Seashore and at the Audubon Nature Center. Wine tasting at the Truro Winery lends itself to a nice little respite in your travels -- and don't forget the spice shop across the street. Lighthouses dot the Cape for great tours and views. And, in the evening be sure to take in a play or two at the Cape Cod summer theatres (where summer stock theatre began.) And, soon Cape Cod League Baseball will begin. See baseball the way our fathers enjoyed it, sitting on a grassy knoll with your picnic dinner. Or, just simply take a walk at low tide on Cape Cod Bay, and watch for an amazing amount of sea creatures. Follow our simple guide and check off what you see. So book your weekday vacation and remember until June 18th receive a 40% discount on any three nights, Sunday through Thursday. If you can only stay two nights, Sunday through Thursday, we will be happy to offer you our off-season rates through June 18th. Weekends are regular in-season prices now. Book early before your favorite room is taken. See you on Cape Cod -- the vacation that is only a car ride away. The first official weekend of the season, Memorial Day Weekend, was certainly a lot of fun. The Memorial Day Picnic and first ever Scavenger Hunt went really well.
Kevin did a superb job with the ribs and chicken and the brisket was done to perfection. Tried a new German potato salad with bacon and a sweet and sour dressing, which was served warm. The whole 5 pounds was eaten. Erika, one of my friends from Germany, really liked it and asked for the recipe. She said in Germany they never had it warm. Showed her the old family cookbook from 1947. Now she can't wait to make it for their next gathering. We had a corn salad, Navy beans with parsley, scallions and white wine vinegar, sweet potato salad with peanut dressing, lemon vinaigrette pasta salad, watermelon and brownies for desert.
Dinner was followed by the awarding of Scavenger Hunt prizes. The grand prize went to Alan and Karla who earned the most points and gave us ideas for some new questions for the Labor Day Scavenger Hunt. They were pleased with their two-night stay gift certificate at the Inn. Better make your reservations early for Labor Day and get in on all the fun.
The next picnic coming up is Friday, July 3rd. This picnic will be held in conjunction with the fireworks at Rock Harbor. Come and enjoy all the great food and beautiful fireworks. After dinner we walk down to Rock Harbor, and the fireworks are right over head. You feel like you can almost touch them. Those that boom kind of reverberate through ones bones.

Special Happenings for 2008 First Night ChathamSpecial Luncheon to Honor Veterans of WW II Monday, December 29, Noon to 3:00 p.m. VFW Hall by Invitation Only The iconic photo at left symbolizes one of the happiest days of the 1940s - the end of World War II and the outbreak of peace. The photo was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt for Life Magazine in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, during the celebration to mark V-J Day, the end of the war. First Night Chatham recognizes the contribution of the men and women who served their country so well during this critical period. This special luncheon will be held to honor all of our local residents who served in the armed forces during the 1940s. Men and women left their homes and families for domestic and foreign places to support of the war effort and safeguard our freedom. Their work and sacrifice brought us peace for many years. We join with others in appreciation. The First Night committee continues to seek out the names of our honored veterans who served during this time. If you know of someone who has not yet been contacted, please email us at veterans@firstnightchatham.com! Countdown Cod and Fireworks Chatham's answer to Times Square at New Year's Eve is Countdown Cod*. Designed and built by First Night Chatham's Richard Clifford, the sculpture is a true work of art and a codfish with a personality. The cod will be hoisted 60 feet above the Oyster Pond parking lot on a crane at about 11:45 pm. Five minutes later, the cod will be illuminated by 20 halogen lights planted in its body. And at 11:59 pm on the dot, Countdown Cod will be lowered to the ground at the precise speed of one foot per second. When the cod completes its descent at midnight, the fireworks display will commence over Oyster Pond to welcome in the New Year. You have to see this! Cape Cod OperaThe Cape Cod Opera will perform to celebrate Chatham in the Forties on Tuesday, December 30 at 7:30 pm at the Methodist Church. This performance requires a First Night Chatham button. The program will include selections from opera, operetta, Gilbert and Sullivan, and musical comedy. Prints are available for purchase at CVS on Main Street. At the same time and in the same place, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct tours of the Chatham Lighthouse from Noon to 2:00 pm. Here is another choice for your Thanksgiving dining pleasure. Had dinner here the other night and the food is delicious. We tried the crab cakes and they were actually just crab, which made the rich and delicious. I had the frog legs as an entree, and they were to die for. I guess I get that from my mother, who was very conservative in her eating, but she loved her frog legs -- nice and little -- and she would have loved these. Also, had beets with dinner -- one of my favorite veggies there. One of the other ladies had the petite surf and turf and thoroughly enjoyed it. The third in our party had the veal saltimbocca and it was huge, delicious, and she had enough for the next night for dinner. It was a lovely dining experience all around. <strong>STARTERSCrab Bisque Academy Clams Littlenecks broiled with garlic, apricots, ham, macadamia nuts and butter Duck Potstickers Ground duck seasoned with 5 spices wrapped in won-ton wrappers Chesapeake Crab Cake Lump crab, sweet peppers and onions, pan-fried served with a pesto butter and roasted pepper coulis Southwestern Chicken Spring Rolls Shredded breast of chicken, peppers, onions, black beans and corn tossed with fresh cilantro, Cajun seasoning and a hint of cumin, rolled in thin rice skins and served crispy with yellow tomato salsa and chipotle lime sour cream Vegetable Samosas Carrots, peas, onions and potatoes, roasted with assorted spices and curry leaves, wrapped in thin pastry, served crispy with our house made chutney Butternut Raviolis Served with a prosciutto and sage butter ENTREESAll entrées come with our House salad of mesclun greens, feta cheese, cucumbers, grape tomatoes and cranberry vinaigrette or Classic Caesar salad with garlic croutons and grated Parmesan cheese Turkey Dinner Fresh turkeys, slow roasted, served with sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, green beans and homemade cranberry sauce Sole Francaise Dipped in egg, sautéed, topped with blue crab and a lemon beurre blanc, served with rice pilaf, asparagus and carrots Pork Tenderloin Slow-roasted pork tenderloin with a maple cream sauce, served with sweet potato, green beans and corn Ocean Grille Sword Center cut, wood fire grilled, topped with our basil-Parmesan glaze, served with mashed potatoes, broccolini and sautéed zucchini & summer squash Flat Iron Steak 10 oz. flat iron steak, grilled over hickory with our house spices, garnished with your choice of buttermilk blue cheese butter or Bearnaise sauce, served with scalloped potatoes, asparagus and beets Veal Saltimbocca Veal scaloppini topped with Prosciutto, sage and fontina cheese, served with Marsala sauce, scalloped potatoes, broccolini and spaghetti squash DESSERTSAn assortment of homemade pies or pumpkin mousse for you to enjoy $37.00 per person plus tax and gratuity So make your reservations at the Inn and we will be happy to make your dinner reservations from any of those listed today and yesterday. Today is rather a blustery day on Cape Cod, but the sun is shining over the marsh rendering a cacophony of color. The sea grass is showing off its golden color, which almost seems to sparkle in the sun -- natures own "amber waves." Ground cover on the dunes has turned a dark shade of red. This back drop really shows off the white of the gulls circling about. The trees have all taken on their fall jewel tones. The evergreen trees are emerald with berries of jade. The blue spruce certainly challenges the blue of any star sapphire. The oak trees run the gamut from smokey quartz to the dark shades of the cat's eye. The ruby red fire bushes stand out in nature's fall array. Added to this mix of color are the brilliant citrine yellows, the agate oranges, and all splattered with garnet splotches. So come on down for your own romantic walk on Cape Cod. Afterwards sit by your fire, read that book you haven't had time for, enjoy a bowl of clam chowder at one of our many area restaurants, do a little holiday shopping, or book the best massage ever, after relaxing in the sauna, hot tub, and resistance pool. Check out our November specials, and we will see you soon. Labels: Birding, Food, Hiking, Spa Treatments, specials

Today is the Orleans Strawberry Festival. We celebrated this morning with Granola Pizza. Here is the recipe so you may revel in the flavors of the Strawberry. Granola Breakfast PizzaThis pancake is baked in a pizza pan with a little lip; and topped with bananas, brown sugar and butter topping, fresh seasonal fruits, and whipped cream. It is a great dish to add a splash of color, especially for the Fourth of July and such. Topping 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoon butter Pancake 2 eggs 1 3/4 cups milk 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon Maple extract, Mapleine or maple syrup 2 cups pancake mix 3/4 cup granola (without raisins) 1/2 cup macadamia nuts, chopped (pecans, walnuts, or almonds may be substituted -- or not nuts at all, if you prefer) Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine brown sugar, butter and water in a saucepan. Bring to a low boil stirring occasionally. If sugar does not dissolve or topping is too thick, add a little more water. In a large bowl beat the eggs, milk, oil and Mapleine (maple syrup). Add the pancake mix and beat the mixture by hand until smooth. Coat the inside of a 12 or 14-inch pizza pan with non-stick cooking oil spray. Pour 1 1/2 cups batter onto the pan, spread batter and sprinkle granola and nuts evenly over the batter. Bake in the lower third of the oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Cut the pie into wedges and top with sliced bananas on the left hand corner. Spoon the brown sugar mixture over the bananas and pizza slice. Add strawberry slices to the right corner, 3 slices of peach to the point and decorate with a few blueberries or blackberries for added color. Add a dollop of whipped cream on bananas, strawberries and peaches. Makes two pies serving 12. Labels: Festival, Food, Recipe
