Today is rather a blustery day on Cape Cod, but the sun is shining over the marsh rendering a cacophony of color. The sea grass is showing off its golden color, which almost seems to sparkle in the sun -- natures own "amber waves." Ground cover on the dunes has turned a dark shade of red. This back drop really shows off the white of the gulls circling about. The trees have all taken on their fall jewel tones. The evergreen trees are emerald with berries of jade. The blue spruce certainly challenges the blue of any star sapphire. The oak trees run the gamut from smokey quartz to the dark shades of the cat's eye. The ruby red fire bushes stand out in nature's fall array. Added to this mix of color are the brilliant citrine yellows, the agate oranges, and all splattered with garnet splotches. So come on down for your own romantic walk on Cape Cod. Afterwards sit by your fire, read that book you haven't had time for, enjoy a bowl of clam chowder at one of our many area restaurants, do a little holiday shopping, or book the best massage ever, after relaxing in the sauna, hot tub, and resistance pool. The weekend of October 24th through 26th brought a really nice group of people to the Inn. We shared in anniversaries, birthdays, and family get-to-gethers. Guests enjoyed the property, massages, breakfast and happenings in the area. One family was especially pleased with our itineraries and spent the day finding all the sights mentioned in it. Saturday Walks -- If you want to get the family outdoors and get a little education while you're at it, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History hosts Family Field Walks year-round every Saturday and Sunday (and Monday-Friday in July and August). Explore the John Wing Trail at the museum with a trained naturalist, who will give you all the facts about marsh, oak-pine forest and beach habitats. The one-and-a-half hour walk covers 1.2 miles, so even the little ones can enjoy it. Cost is free with museum admission. Call 508-896-3867 for time of hike. Arts and crafts: Saturday, October 11th and Sunday the 12th at Nauset Middle School in Orleans where a visit to the Cape area isn't complete without a peek at what local artisans have to offer. The Artisans' Guild Arts and Crafts shows, which are held five different times a year at the local Middle School, feature a vast selection of the best in local crafters' wares. WOW! Did you Know 62 Isn't so Bad? Here are three really important items for those turning (or have already turned)62 years of age. First of all, the National Parks offers, for a one-time fee of $10, a National Park Pass that is good for any National Park in the USA, and it is good for the whole of your life. Secondly, Cape Cod National Seashore, which is a nationally recognized premier destination for those visiting the Cape, is a place where you can use this great little pass. Created by an act of Congress in 1961, here is what the National Seashore has to offer: 43,000 acres of coastline, dunes, kettle ponds and trails. It is a vibrant source of education and entertainment for locals and visitors alike. You can sightsee by car, canoe, bicycle, kayak, or backpack. There are six beaches, 11 self-guided nature trails, nine lighthouses, numberous picnic areas and countless breathtaking views. At the Salt Pond Visitor's Center, open from 9 to 4:30 daily, pick up trail maps, event calendars, and knowledge of the area. There is also a visitor center in the Province Lands in Provincetown, where the bicycle trail offers a challenge. Third, you can spend your vacation at the Whalewalk Inn on our three acre compound. Become a part of the history of this 1830s whaling captain's house. Hardly seems possible that this is the last week in August. It has been a magnificent summer -- even the thunder storms were exciting and usually in the evening or at night. Great how cooperative the weather is here. Our Labor Day Weekend Picnic is September 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Bring your own drinks and the rest will be provided -- smoked ribs, chicken and beef brisket. We will have a yellow potato salad with capers, our own corn salad, pasta salad, brownies and more. Some events coming up for this week, so you can plan your trip are on Saturday, August 23rd there is a Farmers' market on Old colony Way in Orleans Center, 8:00 AM to Noon. The Harwich Conservation Trust is giving free guided tours from 9 AM to noon lasting 1 to 2 hours. Call 508-432-3997 for details. Sunday, August 24th -- Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Eastham has their trails open from 8 AM daily. There are guided hikes, seal cruises, nature education and kayak trips. Call 508-349-2615 for reservations. Of course, there is always a stroll through Wellfleet to enjoy all the galleries. Golf is a staple here, and there are some amazing courses for beginners to old pros. Certainly if your golf game isn't up to par, the views will make up for it. Some of our guests have even taken sailing lessons. Said it was awesome. A lazy kayak trip through the salt marshes is a peaceful way to spend the afternoon, and get a little exercise too. We have a couple of nights available on Monday and Tuesday. We have our Guest House 5 available for three nights starting on Wednesday.
