“What’s Hot in Wellfleet and Eastham,” Editor’s Choice, May 2007, page 16.
These two towns, which boast shores on both the ocean and the bay, comprise the heart of the Outer Cape. Both have a rich sense of history and eclectic character. Although they are both pretty seasonal, local amenities are diverse, from art and shopping on Wellfleet’s Main Street to the myriad points of interest on Route 6 and beyond in Eastham.
Andre Pottery Studio—Each piece of pottery is unique and either hand-built or wheel-thrown on premise. This artist is known for making her products using different colors of the sea: greens, blues and whites. (5 Commercial St., Wellfleet)
WHAT—Make sure to check out the much awaited opening of the new theater in Post Office Square. Don’t worry, for all you die-hards the old theater will continue to operate. (1 Kendrick Avenue, Wellfleet)
Hole-in-One Donut Shop—Size does matter. These donuts are made daily along with the glazes and frostings; the shop even invites you to come in and sample some flavors. (4295 Route 6, North Eastham)
White Cedar Swamp—Be sure to bring your walking shoes. This moderately difficult 1 ¼ mile trail beginning at Marconi Station takes you through an oak and pine forest until reaching a boardwalk that runs over the swamp. (99 Marconi site Road, Wellfleet)
Jake Bruinoog—Check to see if your favorite has been carved; if not, maybe you can put in a request to see a bird poised just as you had seen it in the wild. (110 Western Avenue, South Wellfleet)
The Eclectic Stores of Wellfleet’s Main Street (Yak Arts, The Secret Garden, Pickle and Puppy, Abiyoyo)--/The shopping is never boring when ultra modern toys hang from the rafters and hand carved jewelry boxes drip with sterling silver amulets and toe rings.
Arnold’s Lobster & Clam Bar—In the earlier days this restaurant featured roller skating hops modeled after the then-famous television show, “Happy Days.” A new location and multiple renovations have brought this establishment up to present times. The onion rings are great. (3580 Route 6, Eastham)
Cape Cod Dog—There’s a 6-foot bakery case filled with birthday cakes and “Woofie Pies,” accessories and even clothing for the owner. (4665 Route 6, Eastham)
Mac’s Seafood—You can’t beat the view at this pier-side restaurant. Serving up everything from sandwiches to sushi, this is not your ordinary fried fish shack. (265 Commercial Street, Wellfleet)
Beachcomber—High above Cahoon Hollow Beach, bathing suits and sandy feet are expected at this casual restaurant/bar. Undoubtedly the best music scene on Cape, the rafters rock each time surf guitar legend Dick Dale is in the house. (1120 Cahoon Hollow Road, Wellfleet)
Wicked Oyster—Dinner guests come for upscale tastes and casual sentiments, but early risers flock to the front porch to bask in the morning sunshine and sip strong coffee. (50 Main Street, Wellfleet)
Little Overhead Surf Shop—Wind + water + waves = a way cool way to spend an afternoon. (4900 Route 6, Eastham)
Willy’s Gym—As if the salt system swimming pool, rock wall, tennis and racquetball courts, and fitness classes weren’t enough this health club also features an onsite spa as well as a restaurant and full service bar. (4730 Route 6, Eastham)
Whalewalk Inn & Spa—Take a rejuvenation vacation at a getaway filled with creature comforts. (220 Bridge Road, Eastham)
The Art Galleries of Bank and Commercial (Nicholas Harrison Gallery, Brophy Fine Art, Left Bank Gallery, Blue Heron Gallery, and Harmon Gallery)—Wellfleet is an art haven. Prepare to be enlightened.
Nauset Ice Cream—Anywhere from 33 to 36 flavors are constantly being churned to meet the demand of summer crowds. Cape cod Cranberry (a vanilla-based ice cream with cranberry flavors and craisins) is one of the more unique flavors. (4550 Route 6, North Eastham)
Beaches of the National Seashore—The “Triple Treat” of all beaches is Coast guard, Nauset Light and Marconi. (Eastham, Wellfleet)
