The Improper Bostonian,
Marvelous Mini-Moons, for Boston’s Newlyweds, Postnuptial Relaxation is a Car Ride Away,
February 4 17, 2004.
Tradition has it that once the vows are said, the cake cut and bouquet tossed, it’s time for the newlyweds to hop on a plane and head out for a week’s recuperation in a tropical paradise. But if the happy couple just dropped upwards of $35,000, on their big day, seven nights at the Ritz-Carlton Bali might not be in their budget. Sometimes just-marrieds are simply exhausted from months of wedding planning and unwilling to deal with airports and travel itineraries. Or perhaps their careers are too demanding to allow for an extended vacation on top of time already taken off for the wedding.
Wedding planner, Arlene Cronk, who founded the Boston Wedding Group, says she sees many two-career couples opting for a shorter trip immediately after the wedding. ‘If they’re getting married during a particularly busy season, and they can’t leave work for an extended period of time, couples often take just a couple of days after the wedding and then take the extended honeymoon in a month or so.’
Kimberly and Chris Hine, who made a brief escape to Martha’s Vineyard after their July wedding in Lexington, are on example. ‘We decided we’d rather save the money for when we really needed a break from work, and when it was cold in New England and warm in Mexico,’ says Kimberly. ‘We didn’t want to spend a lot of time traveling and dealing with the hassle of flying right after the wedding. We wanted to just relax and chill.’
Whether to save time, money or their sanity, many couples are following their New England nuptials with a two- or three-day romantic getawaya mini-moon, if you will. Lucky for Boston brides and grooms, the Northeast is stocked with inns, bed-and-breakfasts and upscale resorts that specialized in candlelit dinners, in-room massages, Jacuzzis for two and privacy with a view. From ultra-deluxe cottages to cozy B & Bs, here’s a sampling of spots with the goods for a sweet mini-moon.

The Whalewalk Inn -- Far from the tourist traps of Hyannis and Falmouth, Eastham’s Whalewalk Inn is neatly situated on the quiet Outer Cape, between Cape cod Bay and the National Seashore. French doors, four-poster king size-beds and wing-backed chairs decorate each of the 16 rooms on the three-acre compound, and available room options include steam showers, heated tile floors, heated towel rack, Jacuzzis and whirlpool tubs. Newly weds are greeted with Champagne and can enjoy a gourmet country breakfast and an afternoon hors d’oeuvre hour daily. Assistant innkeeper, Heather Conlin, suggests booking one of the largest and most unique accommodations: Carriage House 5 or 6, or Room 1 in the Main Inn. All three have fireside sitting areas, the Carriage House rooms have balconies overlooking the Inn’s wildflower field, and Room 1 has a private entrance. The Whalewalk Inn also offers in-season discounts (a rarity) for honeymoons, $205 to $450 nightly.
