Day One: After a hearty breakfast, head north for a different and exciting day of golf. Begin with 9 holes at The Highland Golf Links (508-487-9201) in Truro. This is a links course with some interesting twists and doglegs. The views of the Atlantic are breathtaking, and the air is fresh and salty. This course can be walked or carts are available.
After you finish these nine holes, drive back south to Wellfleet. Here you can stop for lunch at the Bookstore (There is one in the back with some new and some very old finds.) Restaurant. A cup of clam chowder is a great starter. Move down the menu to the Wellfleet Oysters. The Bookstore’s claim to fame is that their oysters are so fresh, they never touched ice. After a dozen or so of those, there is a great fish sandwich, a delicious lobster roll, or clam roll whole body or strips. A glass of Sam Adams is always a great accompaniment.
Take a right out of the restaurant parking lot and follow the road to Chequessett Country Club (508-349-3704). Here is another 9-hole golf course for the afternoon. This course is more traditional, but land in the woods, and you will be fortunate to find your ball. (You may even find a few Whalewalk Inn balls in the woods. If you do find one, we will buy you a drink at your favorite restaurant.) Hole number 3 is a killer, even with a par 5.
After this exciting day of golf, return to the Inn Spa for a massage before dinner, or maybe a facial would be just the thing after a day in the salty air.
For dinner you may want to consider the Academy Ocean Grille. Dine on filet of Sole with Crab Sauce, Moroccan Shrimp, or a Filet Mignon. Their vegetables are out of this world in not only the way they are done, but also the variety. From the Academy, if the Orleans Cardinals are playing, you could walk over to the ball field and catch a couple of innings. Back to the Inn to have an after dinner cordial and watch a movie from our library.
Day Two: After your gourmet breakfast, head towards Brewster to play at the Captain’s Course (508-896-5100). They have two 18-hole golf courses Starboard or Port. Both are spectacular and offer a challenging day of golf.
If you finish and it is nearing 5:00 PM, you may want to consider the Brewster Fish House for dinner. They only have 11 tables, do not take reservations and fill up quickly. If you arrive at 5:00, you most likely will be seated. The lobster bisque is the best on the Cape and the whole striped bass is to die for. The seafood on pasta is amazing, and the presentation is delightful on all orders.
After dinner, arrive back at the Inn and freshen up for a night at the theatre. The Orleans Repertory theatre has a production going all summer. Check the www.Orleanschamber.com for details on what is playing during your visit and information on ordering tickets.
Day Three: If you want to golf, but need a little bit of a rest, Blue Rock Golf Course (508-398-9295) is an excellent 18-hole par 3 course. There are four water holes in which you have to cross the river, leaving the most difficult for the 18th hole. It is only a walking course, so wear your comfortable golf shoes.
After your golf game, take a ride over to Hyannis. Walk down Main Street and view the shops. There is a fabulous Japanese, Korean, Thai restaurant over by the train station called Yings. They have fresh rolls, dumplings with pork or beef, red curry soft-shelled crab, pad Thai and many other items to please your pallet.
If you want to head back to the Inn after golf, and want dinner closer to the Inn, Abba’s (508-255-8144) is a wonderful choice. We suggest that you make reservations early as it is small and they do fill up quickly. Their menu is a fusion of Mediterranean and Thai. They have salmon, tuna, duck, filet of beef, pad Thai with seafood and even a tofu pad Thai. Besides desert, you may want to try a Godiva Martini Yummy! You surely do not want to miss this gem of a restaurant.
