This theatre develops new American plays and invites the audience to see the most innovative and exciting works in American theater before they go on to full performances on stages across the country. The project brings together writers of new plays with professional directors and actors for staged readings in intimate settings. After only 20 hours of rehearsal, actors perform with scripts in hand and a suggestion of sets and costumes. The playwrights benefit from the input given by the directors and actors as well as a post performance audience discussion.

The top floor was renovated in 1971 with funds donated by stage actress Katharine Cornell (18981974), a summer resident. The large murals painted by a local artist, Stan Murphy, depict Vineyard whaling scenes and recognize the role of Native Americans on-Island. The ceiling fresco is festooned with seagulls. The renovation of the theater was completed in honor of the 300th anniversary of Tisbury. The theater is used for local plays and shows, and can be rented through the town offices, located on the first floor.
