Cape Cod Maritime Days -- May 2008 For more than 250 years after the first lighthouse was built on Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha‘s Vineyard, no book had ever been written specifically about the beacons along this shoreline. During that period, more than 40 lighthouse guided mariners through these treacherous waters, and they comprised a concentration of beacons greater than any other in the entire world. These particular lights became not only a symbol for this region, but also a display of our nation’s progress. Study about this important part of your history by reading America's Landfall: The Historic Lighthouses of Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard by Donald W. Davidson. After reading this informative lighthouse book, you can experience some of our famous ones and visit the open houses that will hosted during Cape Cod Maritime Days throughout May. Tour Nauset Light on Sundays, May 11th and 18th, 1 to 4 PM. This tour is free. Climb to the top of the light and learn about its history and importance. It is located at Nauset Light Beach, Eastham. Vist the open house at Three Sister Lighthouses, Sundays, May 11th and 18th, 1 to 3:30 PM. This open house is free. Great to be back on Cape Cod. The weather even cooperated with our return. It was clear and 50 degrees, which after being in the 80s, it was a pleasant shock to the system. After unpacking looked at the gardens and the daffodils are really sprouting and some even have buds on them. That is so exciting! Daffodil time is always so pretty on the Cape. The Town of Brewster will be holding their daffodil festival the weekend of May 2, 3 and 4. There will be many happenings for many different interests. Art galleries, antique and craft shops will have open houses offering special sales and gifts. For the golfer, the Captain's golf Course will host "closest to the pin" contests all weekend. The Brewster Band concert will be on Friday at 7:00 PM, and the Bloom Run will be Saturday morning. The juried fine arts and crafts show will be held Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. The antiques and collectibles fair will be Saturday and Sunday 8:00 to 4:00. In the evening, there will be a "Swing into Spring Big Band Dance at Ocean Edge on Saturday from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. So bring your dancing shoes for a great night of dancing. And what would any festival be on the Cape without a Chowda' Tasting which will be on Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. On Sunday there will be live music at Drummer Boy Park starting at noon until 4:00. And another American love and tradition is the parade which will be on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
